In gaming benchmarks, it surpasses the Intel Core i5-13400 by approximately 20%. It’s important to mention that the Ryzen 5 5600X3D is exclusively accessible at Micro Center and will be offered only as long as supplies last, making it a limited edition.

The Ryzen 5 5600X3D, equipped with six cores and 12 threads, serves as a more budget-friendly alternative to the popular Ryzen 7 5800X3D, boasting eight cores and a $289 price tag. Impressively, the 5600X3D delivers 95% of the gaming performance found in the 5800X3D while being 20% more affordable. According to the CPU benchmarks hierarchy, even at stock settings, the 5600X3D outperforms the entire standard Ryzen 7000 series, including the $599 Ryzen 9 7950X, despite featuring two fewer cores and slightly lower clock speeds. This performance advantage can be attributed to the substantial 96MB of L3 cache in the 5600X3D, enhancing gaming sessions.

A Brief Overview of the R5 5600X3D.

AMD’s X3D processor lineup for gaming now spans from $229 to $669, with the Ryzen 5 5600X3D as the latest addition. While this chip excels in gaming, it’s crucial to note that the 3D V-Cache technology may result in reduced clock speeds, impacting performance in certain productivity applications. Furthermore, not all games experience equal benefits from this technology. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D belongs to the older Ryzen 5000 series, featuring the Zen 3 architecture and a 7nm process node. It remains compatible with previous-generation AM4 motherboards.

In contrast, AMD’s latest Ryzen 7000 chips adopt the faster Zen 4 architecture, built on a 5nm process, and require newer AM5 motherboards. However, these newer chips come with a higher price tag and demand more expensive DDR5 memory. In contrast, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D supports more affordable DDR4 memory, establishing itself as a cost-effective option for the entire system.

Price and availability of the Ryzen 5 5600X3D.

If you’re not in proximity to a Micro Center, obtaining the 5600X3D becomes considerably challenging. Yet, even if you reside nearby, it’s advisable to pause and reflect before making a purchase. The primary reason for this hesitation stems from the $230 price tag, which might initially appear enticing. However, upon closer examination, you might reconsider when faced with the superior Ryzen 7 5800X3D, available at a relatively close price point.

The limited edition Ryzen 5 5600X3D is likely to receive limited support from motherboard manufacturers.


The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D, a 6-core desktop processor released in July 2023, comes with an MSRP of $229. Belonging to the Ryzen 5 series, it utilizes the Zen 3 (Vermeer) architecture and is compatible with Socket AM4. Thanks to AMD Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), the number of cores effectively doubles, resulting in 12 threads. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D boasts 96 MB of L3 cache and operates at a default speed of 3.3 GHz, with the ability to be boosted up to 4.4 GHz depending on the workload.

Manufactured by AMD on a 7 nm production node, the number of transistors remains undisclosed. The chip’s silicon die is produced not by AMD but by TSMC’s foundry. The Ryzen 5 5600X3D has a locked multiplier, restricting its overclocking capabilities. With a TDP of 105W, the processor consumes a substantial amount of power, necessitating adequate cooling. AMD’s processor supports DDR4 memory with a dual-channel interface, officially supporting a maximum memory speed of 3200 MT/s, but overclocking allows for even higher speeds with the appropriate memory modules. Notably, the processor lacks integrated graphics, requiring a separate graphics card.

The Ryzen 5 5600X3D is designed with gaming in mind. Therefore, we will present benchmarks focusing on the most popular games to assess its performance in comparison to its competitors. An essential consideration here is that, being a hexa-core processor, it is expected to exhibit heightened performance at 1080p resolutions. However, it may encounter challenges as screen resolutions increase.

As evident to anyone, the Ryzen 5 5600X3D excels notably in terms of gaming performance, rendering it an appealing choice for users immersed in gaming activities.

Ryzen 5 5600X3D – Power consumption and efficiency.

The six-core Ryzen 5 5600X3D carries a TDP of 105W, surpassing the 65W TDP of most chips in the test, including the octa-core Ryzen 7 5700X. In certain scenarios, this results in the Ryzen 5 5600X3D consuming more power than the 65W six-core Ryzen 5 5600X, despite the former having lower clock boost rates. This discrepancy is apparent in the HandBrake x264 workload, where the 5600X3D marginally outpaces the 5600X in speed, but the higher power consumption leads to a reduction in the x264 renders-per-day performance metric.

On the whole, the performance of the Ryzen 5 5600X3D lags behind other chips in the test pool, resulting in lower efficiency scores. Furthermore, the 5600X3D draws more power and performs less efficiently than the Core i5-13400 across various workloads. The subpar power performance can be partially attributed to the higher TDP combined with comparatively lower chip performance. However, it’s worth noting that most motherboard manufacturers have not optimized for the 5600X3D, given its status as essentially a cancelled processor with only basic support.

Regarding power consumption, it’s apparent that the Ryzen 5 5600X3D provides exceptional value, establishing itself as one of the most efficient processors with low power consumption.

Final thoughts.

In my personal opinion, opting for the Ryzen 5 5600X3D may not be advisable for someone aiming to build a well-rounded system, even for dedicated gaming. While it does deliver outstanding gaming performance and exhibits low power consumption, there are certain drawbacks that render it less appealing when compared to alternative CPUs.

The limited availability in specific markets and stores could pose challenges for users seeking access to this processor. Furthermore, the absence of core and voltage overclocking capabilities may restrict customization options for individuals aiming to fine-tune their processor’s performance.

Lastly, the absence of integrated graphics, mandating the purchase of a separate graphics card, contributes to the overall cost of system upgrades. In the same price range, there are alternative processors that may offer better overall value, even if it means investing a little more money.
